Process of resource recovery with magnetic-particles

The Fraunhofer Project Group IWKS shows possibilities to secure the supply of raw materials of the industry in the long term, thus securing a leading position in the high-tech. Resource strategies, recycling of resources and substitution of raw materials are the central topics of the IWKS.

Together with partners from industry the group develops novel separating, sorting, processing, and substitution possibilities and investigates strategies for the sustainable use of valuable resources. This is the basis for the formation of interdisciplinary working groups, where complex problems of different work areas are solved. The close integration of the divisions among each other and with the management team consisting of, Prof. Dr. Armin Reller (Augsburg University), Prof. Dr. Oliver Gutfleisch (Technische Universitat Darmstadt), Prof. Dr. Liselotte Schebek (Technische Universitat Darmstadt) and Prof. Dr. Rudolf Stauber (Management Project Group IWKS), enables research approaches along the entire value chain. Project partners are thus optimally supported in their individual tasks.

We offer:

  • Qualitative and quantitative analysis of different materials
  • Innovative physical, chemical, and biological separation technologies
  • Grinding and sorting technologies
  • Material synthesis
  • Economic feasibility studies
  • System analyses for the increase of raw material and energy efficiency
  • Material flow analysis
  • Life cycle assessment (LCA)
  • Criticality analysis and sustainability concepts

Our research focuses on:

  • Food and Bio-based Materials
  • Electric, Electronic
  • Urban Mining
  • Energy Materials
  • Magnetic Materials
  • Lighting

Our core competences are divided in three business divisions: Sustainable Material Cycles, Substitution, and Resource Strategies and Criticality Studies.

The Fraunhofer society is the biggest research organization for application-oriented research in Europe. The research fields are forward-looking and comply with the needs of humans: Health, safety, communication, mobility, energy and environment. In this context the sustainable handling with our resources is crucial not only for our generation but in particular for the future ones, and is a central issue of the Fraunhofer Project Group IWKS.

As a member of BRAVO EIP Fraunhofer IWKS has the perfect requirements to actively take part in projects that contribute to a more efficient use of resources to gain a benefit not only for the European Union today but for the coming generations.
